Tiësto sues US law firm for $17 million

Tiësto has sued law firm Greenberg Traurig. The Breda-based DJ, whose legal name is Tijs Verwest, is demanding millions in damages for providing incorrect tax advice that resulted in him owing the firm $17 million in 2020. His lawyer, Arnold Croiset van Uchelen, confirmed this to ANP on Wednesday, following a report by Het Financieele Dagblad.

During a closed-door hearing at the Amsterdam Court of Appeal on Tuesday afternoon, it was agreed that the parties would hold consultations over the next two weeks to reach a settlement. "We agreed with the judge that we will try to reach a settlement during that period," said the DJ's lawyer.

Tiësto first attempted to hold Greenberg Traurig liable for the amount he had to pay to the US tax authorities in 2024. Although the court acknowledged at the time that the advice the DJ had received was incorrect, it concluded that the artist had suffered no damages as a result. According to the court, the DJ would have had to pay taxes in the US even without the disputed advice, and in that case the amount might even have been higher than what he paid.

Tiësto himself disagrees with this, and says he could have been spared the US levies by limiting his presence in the US and taking the appropriate measures. The DJ informed the presiding judge of the Amsterdam Court of Appeal that he was therefore seeking financial compensation.
